Multimedia freedom or portability is no longer a problem. Wolverine ESP 5160 is the monster storage multimedia player that features 160GB for you photos, videos or music. I don’t think that there are people that will say 160GB is not enough, because I will take personal actions against it, because it can store either 80,000 digital photos, more than 320 hours of video clips or 50,000 songs. It’s bigger than my laptop’s hard disk drive. Huge! There is another thing that gets my attention, the 8 Ohms - 400mW speaker to play music or videos out loud.

The decent FM radio is recordable (AAC) and features a neat retro interface. You also get 18 presets in two groups, and stations are autoscannable. The ESP is a voice recorder out of the box (performance is good at the highest AAC recording setting), but to get line-in audio and video recording, you’ll need to spring for the $69 dock. The good news is that the audio-recording interface features a real-time graphical sound-wave monitor (cool!). Video recording (MPEG-4, 352×240 at 30fps) can be scheduled (up to eight events), and content can even be recorded onto media cards. There is no TiVo-like programming or even channel selection, though. Recorded video looks good, and the accompanying AAC audio is solid.

Overall, the Wolverine ESP 160GB does what it says it will do, but not entirely gracefully. Its best feature is that relatively gigantic 160GB hard disk, giving you the freedom to store just about any data you might need when you’re on the road. It’s fairly rugged, too, where we must admit that it survived a drop of about 3 inches onto a hard desktop while it was playing, and still kept on going without a hitch.
