The new player, which looks like a pen, will come in two variations, the silver-coloured 1GB NW-S203F and the black-coloured 2GB NW-S205F.
In addition to the pedometer, the players are rumoured to feature a calorie counter, stopwatch and be water resistant. An FM tuner and a 1-Line OLED display are also present.
As with other players from Sony, the company is promising a lighting fast charge time of just 3 minutes for 3 hours of play and a total playback of 18 hours on a full charge.

It’s really sexy in the slender canister that looks like one of those old fashioned ladies cigarettes. The NW-S200 is available in two versions, the NW-S203 which comes in a 1GB version and the NW-S205, this one which is available in 2GB comes in a shiny black and made out of brushed aluminium. Both Sony Walkman versions measure 3.8 inches by 0.6 inches and weigh just under an ounce, which is super-duper light. There’s a small single lined OEL display that is brightly lit and shows coloured text on a dark background. Most of the controls are operated by the dial at the top which you use by twisting.

Based on the height, weight and age you insert into the settings, the NW-S205F calculates distance travelled and calories burned using Sony’s patented ‘G-sensor’ technology - a gyroscope that “senses the gravitational movement” of the player. This also works with the Music Pacer feature, which automatically changes your music to the Walking or Running playlists based on the speed of your stride, preceded by a voice asking you to enjoy that playlist. If you straddle between walking and running pace, however, you’ll constantly hear this voice asking you to enjoy music that you’re really not hearing much of due to the interruptions. Worse, each pace change restarts the playlist to the beginning, rather than fading into the music you’re currently listening to. Thankfully, you can turn the playlist feature off.

Navigating the NW-S200 is pretty straightforward, and certainly more intuitive than with the NW-E000. The mode button takes you to the main menu, where you can select from several icon-based options. Twisting the aforementioned knob flips through the selections: search, sports mode, stopwatch, all songs, FM, playlist and settings. If you push the knob all the way in towards the player, it activates the hold function; if you pull it all the way out, you can use it to navigate by album. (In the neutral position, it scrubs through tracks.)

You can search for desired tracks to playback by song name, artist name, or album name. Audio files transferred from the computer with the SonicStage software are always grouped when transferred to the player’s memory. All of the tracks located with the search become a Play Range. Unless a repeat mode is set, playback will stop automatically at the end of the Play Range.
