When the YP-K5 was released by Samsung in 2006, its unique built-in, slide-out speaker design was a real head turner. And though the device was bulky, it had strong battery life and even a pair of decent earbuds. The update, the new flash memory–based YP-S5 (commonly known as the S5), keeps its predecessor’s innovative design but loses some of its bulk. Available in 2GB ($130 list) and 4GB ($180) capacities, the S5 features the familiar Samsung graphics, a top-notch interface, and the snazzy feather-touch buttons found in all of the company’s players. The pull-out speaker is a fun option for the beach or a hotel room, and you get nice Bluetooth 2.0 features here, too. The player’s robust EQ options—particularly when paired with an upgraded pair of earphones—make your music shine.

The Samsung S5 multimedia player is available in a 2GB, 4GB and 8GB version. The version we have tested has an internal memory of 4GB at its disposal. The dimensions of the YP-S5 are 46.5 x 95.9 x 14.8 mm and the TFT LCD monitor measures 1.8-inch. With its weight of 78.7 grams the Samsung S5 is very light. Compared with its predecessor, the K5, the Samsung S5 is a tad more compact and lighter. The design has not changed much, it remained equally beautiful and it still is an innovative design. The slider function for activating the speakers works greatly and it also supports the multimedia player when placing it on a surface.

All up, the YP-S5 is a decent successor to the K5. As for whether the speaker is useful enough to justify the extra pocket bulk, we must say we were pleasantly surprised by its multiple applications. It transforms the player into an alarm clock and speakerphone and allows you to share songs and video with friends without having to share earwax via headphones. Anything that wakes us up, frees our hands and prevents unnecessary body-fluid swapping is grand in our book.
