JVC has introduced the Alneo XA-HD500 alongside the headphone-styled XA-A50 and flash-based XA-MP101. The 6 GB XA-HD500 will be competing head-on with players from more established brands including Apple and Creative, yet aims to stand out through longevity and JVC’s K2 audio technology.
JVC expands its Alneo line of digital audio players with the introduction of the XA-HD500, a six gigabyte (GB) hard drive player that features exclusive JVC audio enhancement technology, 30 hours of continuous playback and includes a dedicated docking station and a remote control.
The JVC Alneo XA-HD500 plays MP3 and WMA files, supports Windows Media Player® 10 and features a USB 2.0 connection for fast file transfers. Other features include a backlit LCD, the option of recharging through the supplied docking station/AC adapter or the USB port when connected to a computer, four digital surround listening modes and Active Hyper Bass for enhanced bass performance.
The player, which is finished in black and measures 2” x 3.6” x 0.7”, weighs 3.2 ounces and comes with a docking station that charges the player’s battery as well as being equipped with audio outputs for connecting to a PC or audio component for playback. There is also an included infrared remote control for operating the player which, when pressed, automatically enlarges the display’s type-size for easier reading when used for home playback in the docking station

With only two Flash-based audio players under its belt, JVC takes aim at the HDD-based audio player market with the Alneo XA-HD500. The Alneo sports a 6 GB hard drive capable of storing up to 3000 songs, and the complete list of audio formats supported includes MP3, WMA and WMA DRM with the latter enabling access to PlaysForSure compatible music download services such as Napster and Yahoo! Music. Measuring in at 91 x 51 x 18 mm (3.6 x 2 x 0.7 inches) and 92 g (3.2 oz), the Alneo is not unwieldy but its silver case surely needs an extreme makeover to appeal at first sight.

JVC had this very random, non-exciting yet nevertheless completely new DAP to show off. The “alneo XA-HD500″ is a monochrome-screened, 6GB DAP that’s barely smaller than a regular iPod. This brushed-steel face plated thing supposedly comes with a plain docking station and a remote control.

These above formats are also the two exclusively supported by the Alneo XA-HD500, including the WMA DRM format which has gained increasing support as of late. The audio player offers four digital surround listening modes and JVC’s Active Hyper Bass feature, with other highlights including a backlit LCD display, USB 2.0 connectivity and a charging cradle with audio outputs. Also, the XA-HD500 supports USB charging.

The JVC XA-HD500 comes with a docking station that not only charges the player’s battery, but also features audio outputs for easily connecting the player to a PC or audio component for playback. There is also an included infrared remote control for operating the player. What’s more, using the remote automatically enlarges the display’s type-size for easier reading when used for home playback in the docking station. USB and audio cables are included.
JVC Alneo XA-HD500 price at $249
