iAUDIO is a portable digital music player produced by Cowon Systems, Inc. You can easily transfer digital music files from your computer to iAUDIO, and carry it anywhere to enjoy. It also supports FM radio listening/recording, as well as voice recording and direct encoding through the built-in microphone and Line-In input jack.

The iAudio makes a claim to be the World’s Smallest 20GB hard disk-based music player (there’s a 40GB version now, too) and it clearly is, as long as you ignore the inline remote, where the engineers have offloaded the LCD screen and most of the controls. It’s not a bad gimmick, really, and for somebody that uses in-line remote (I happen to love them), it really makes a lot of sense. In fact, if there are any serious failings of the iAudio M3, it’s in the controls and software, not the atypical form factor.

iAudio M3 is about 10 percent slimmer than the iPod, though the manufacturer took a few design shortcuts, namely, moving the screen, the controls, and the ports to external modules. If you can picture yourself using only an in-line remote–albeit one with a spacious screen–to control your MP3 player while it’s stored out of sight, the M3 deserves serious consideration as an alternative to the iPod.
