The iAudio 6 is the latest addition to the iAudio family produced by Cowon. Following the same naming system as the popular iAudio 4 and 5, people expected the i6 to be a flash based memory MP3 player. This is not the case though – the player uses an 0.85 inch hard drive produced by the company Toshiba.
Cowon is the first company to use this hard drive technology in their mp3 players, the advantage being that flash memory is currently still more expensive than a hard drive.

The world’s first MP3 player with a 0.85-inch HDD for increased stability and portability, the Cowon iAudio 6 represents the next generation of personal media players. The unit’s HDD is barely the size of a coin (the entire player measures only 1.4 by 3 by 0.75 inches), yet it delivers 4 GB of storage space–enough for virtually any application. The iAudio 6 also supports a host of audio formats, including MP3, WMA, WMV DRM-10, OGG, FLAC, and WAV, giving you no shortage of choices when adding music to the drive.

The Cowon iAudio 6 is an ideal size–not iPod Nano thin but extremely pocketable, at 2.75 by 1.25 by 0.75 inches and 2.12 ounces. It’s only slightly bigger than the iAudio U3, but it has a bigger screen and more storage. Cowon employs a new touch-sensitive interface for the main controllers. The diagonal slider stripe (a.k.a. Swing Touch) makes for smooth navigating–once you get used to it. Swing Touch allows for some atypical navigation, including forwarding and reversing through tracks with a slide of the thumb, scrolling through songs on the playback screen when paused, or skipping by track or by 2, 4, and up to 30 seconds of the song at a time; you can specify from many options in the general-settings area

iAudio 6 supports not only MP3 files but also WMA and OGG files which boast superior sound quality. The player also supports FLAC and WAV. iAudio 6 lets you view pictures or read text files on a spacious 7-line colour display while listening to music. Enjoy it anyway you want! Don’t underestimate the power of iAudio 6 for its tiny dimensions. iAudio 6’s power rating is amongst the best in its class (30mW + 30mW). Enjoy the extremely powerful sound and deep bass from iAudio 6!

The 1.3” 260K color OLED 160 x 128 pixel screen takes up most of the real estate on the front of this player. I was never impressed by OLED technology, especially with smaller screens. The colors were not very accurate and the resolution was fuzzy compared to LCDs. On the contrary, the iAudio 6’s OLED screen is simply brilliant- matching, if not surpassing, LCD technology on other MP3 players.

The iAudio 6 offers good bookmarking features, but you can create only a single dynamic playlist, unlike the iPod, which lets you save multiple playlists directly on the device. It also offers advanced playback features like A-B repeat, variable-speed playback, adjustable skip length, and adjustable scan speed. You can even customize the Menu and Rec buttons’ behavior so that they perform different functions depending on whether you press them briefly or hold them down.
