The D2 will ship with 2GB or 4GB of built-in flash memory (prices not yet available), and it offers a 30-hour rated battery life for audio. Turn the player on, and you’re greeted by a bright color display and an icon-driven main menu–rather Archos-like, actually. The interface is rather different from that of other Cowon models. For one, it’s a touch screen, which responds to your finger or, if you prefer, to the included stylus. You can also use this handy little accessory to prop up the player via a built-in slot, and it’s the perfect size for use with the reset button–awesome. (It’s the little things that count.

The battery allows for 52 hours of audio playback and up to 10 hours video playback, and this player is very small. At only 78.0 x 55.4 x 16.6 mm and weighing only 91 grams it fits easily into your pocket to take you media with you wherever you go. You can also hold a pretty decent amount of multimedia files as it comes in 2GB and 4GB sizes, and you can add an SD card of up to another 4GB.

Crucially, the D2 can sustain its activities for longer thanks to last-minute refinements to its battery use. Music has witnessed the greatest improvement, stretching from 45 hours to 52 hours of continuous play by Cowon’s estimates; runtime for DMB TV broadcasts has been extended by an additional hour to 9 hours. In its shipping edition, the D2 will be available in 2GB and 4GB models compatible with Macs and Windows PCs beginning December 19th.

Cowon obviously designed a new user interface just for the D2. We think it looks gorgeous. A floating translucent control bar manifests in the middle of the screen when this is touched during playback and disappears after seconds of inactivity. Context-based menus are situated at the bottom of the panel. Pressing one will serve up a vertical bar of options. It’s a pleasure to use and easy on the eye.
