JVC’s new modestly-priced HA-NC80 headphones deliver up to 75 percent noise reduction. But rather than treat all listening situations alike, JVC recognized that the nature of background noise varies from one environment to another, and so developed dual-mode noise canceling circuitry so the user can choose the most effective mode for the circumstances. In addition, to help block ambient noise the headphones feature fully padded, closed earpieces.
The HA-NC80 offers both “wide” and “low” noise cancellation modes. The “wide” mode targets a wider frequency range than the “low” mode, and cancels the type of noise typically found in a commercial jet cabin. The “low” mode cancels a slightly narrower and lower frequency range, one associated with the noise generated by trains and buses. In addition, the headphones can be used with noise cancellation turned off.
The HA-NC80 headphones are ideally suited for travel. They fold flat so that they’re easy to carry or pack, and they come with a carrying pouch and a dual-plug adapter to they can be plugged into a commercial airplane’s entertainment system. In addition, the padded earpieces and headband ensure that they’ll remain comfortable throughout a long flight.

The HA-NC80s’ completely circular shape and relatively small 2.5-inch diameter are no doubt responsible for the uncomfortable fit. However, the headphones aren’t overly tight–and the earcups have some cushy padding–so those with less sensitive ear cartilage may find them suitably comfortable. The cord is plenty long at 5 feet, but it doesn’t retract like that of the HA-NC100. The HA-NC80 headphones fold up flat into a semicircle–it’s not the most compact design we’ve seen, but JVC does include a travel pouch for transport. There’s also a dual prong adapter for in-flight use and a AAA battery for the noise cancellation feature.

On the sound-quality tip, the JVC HA-NC80s do a surprisingly decent job. I wouldn’t call it fantastic, but when paired with a Creative Zen V Plus, the headphones provided clear highs and a balanced midrange. Even low-end response was decent, though bass addicts may not be entirely satisfied. All in all, I was most pleased with the performance for rock and midtempo electronica. Rated battery life with the noise cancellation turned on is a respectable 25 hours
