    The NS-DV2G is a 2GB MP3 player/photo viewer/video device that plays music in the MP3 and WMA formats (Best Buy provides a firmware update via the Insignia website that expands compatibility to Audible and OGG formats). It also supports Best Buy Music Service and is PlaysForSure compatible. The NS-DV2G displays still images (JPEG) and plays video/movies (WMV/MPEG4) on its 2.2 inch color TFT LCD (128 pixels x80 pixels) display screen.

    At 3.9 x 1.8 x 0.6 inches, the Insignia is on the hefty side, but it should still fit in most pockets. The unit is all black, with a shiny plastic face and a nicely textured backside. An ample 2.2-inch color screen takes up about two-thirds of the front, while playback controls take up the other third. Two tactile buttons–power and menu–rest above a five-way control wheel: a play/pause key is surrounded by a mechanical scroll wheel that can also be pressed down in four directions to shuttle through tracks or display options.

    With 20 hours of battery life, this player should keep you going for a while. There’s nothing about the NS-DV2G that is going to blow you away–especially as a list of specs in print. But the player is a versatile, easy-to-use device that will give you just about everything you need in a mobile media player–music and audio, video and still images, radio and recording. That it all comes in a sleek, lightweight and compact package makes it all the more appealing. This player won’t kill any giants out there, but it’s a very affordable alternative option in a market without much interest in looking around
