The iMV712 turns the iPod Video into a complete MP3 music + video multi-component entertainment system – perfectly designed for college dorm rooms, teen rooms, desktops, even the kitchen counter.
At the heart of the new iMV712 is an 8.5-inch high resolution LCD screen surrounded by Altec Lansing’s custom-engineered speakers to deliver powerful, concert-like sound and a true cinematic video experience. A built-in four-inch subwoofer provides street-rumbling lows and is perfectly balanced with two three-inch speaker drivers for crisp, clear mids and highs. The result is immersive, high-quality audio, which is heightened by Altec Lansing SFX (Stereo Field Expander). This technology boosts the sound field and gives the user an immersive stereo effect so that the speakers sound further apart than they really are.

In glossy black, the Altec Lansing iMV712 blended nicely into our living room without sticking out too much. More curvy and sleek than a clock radio, we liked the overall look of the device, but wish there was a better way to dock the iPod than have it stick straight out of the top like the black obelisk in Kubrick’s “2001.” Altec Lansing also includes a separate adapter to rest any similarly-sized media player atop the dock, and bundles an A/V cord that plugs into auxiliary input jacks in the back, so even if you don’t have an iPod you can watch videos and maintain the same general aesthetic.

Measuring 18.5 inches long, 8.2 inches wide, and 7.7 inches high, the unit is lighter than you’d think based on its footprint. While the 8.4-pound unit can be moved around a room simply enough, there’s no boombox-like handle to make toting it easier. The iPod dock is on top of the unit (the usual selection of iPod sleeves are included to give your particular iPod a snug fit in the dock), and that’s also where you’ll find the only three buttons on the system: source (iPod or line-in), volume up, and volume down.
