The Altec Lansing inMotion iM4 extends the company’s popular inMotion line of iPod-compatible speakers to other types of portable music devices, including notebook computers. At 5.5 by 10 by 1 inches, the iM4 is a lot bigger than an iPod, but it can pump out 92 dB at 12 inches—about as loud as a blender—and produce spacious, surprisingly realistic sound from 150 Hz through 12 kHz. That’s nearly an octave more than last year’s pricier inMotion iM3. The iM4 also boasts twin input jacks, dual AC/battery operation, a nifty spring-loaded retractable audio cable, and Waves Audio’s MaxxBass low-end enhancement technology.

Crystal-clear sound: from four custom-designed neodymium 25 mm Micro Drivers

Surprisingly deep bass: Revolutionary MaxxBass® technology creates quality bass without a subwoofer

Extra long battery life: Highly efficient Class D amplifier delivers more than 18 hours of continuous playback with four AA batteries (not included)
Convenient Retractable Signal Cable: Provides clean cable management and connects to virtually any audio device, such as MP3 players, CD players, and laptops

Dual inputs: Allows you to connect two audio players at the same time (second cable not included)

Rubberized Base: Provides a non-slip platform for your MP3 or CD players
Lightweight: Folds to close at 28 ounces and 10.25″ wide, 5.3″ deep and 1″ high

The Altec Lansing iM4 speakers are designed for pretty much any device in the market; this could be an MP3 player, a portable DVD player or even a notebook computer. Despite the support for such a vast variety of multimedia appliances, perhaps the most exciting feature of iM4 is that it only requires a single cable for operation. In fact, it only needs two pairs of AA batteries for you to enjoy the plethora of multimedia activities. Instead of just you listening to the music, you can now have an entire group listen to something on the go.

Measuring 10.3 by 5.3 by 1 inches, the folded-up inMotion is roughly the size of a slim hardcover book, and at 28 ounces, it’s a little heavier than other portable speakers in its class. The twin speakers swing open in a smooth, firm motion, and you can tilt them at any angle, up to 180 degrees from the base. The power switch and the volume slider sit on the curved front section, while behind the base, you’ll find an AC input, a minijack port, and a minijack plug on a retractable cable. There isn’t a custom dock for an iPod, but our 20GB model sat comfortably atop the rubberized base.

The inMotion iM4 comes in a big black box with the speakers, a connection wire, an AC adapter with travel plugs and a black nylon carrying case. The speakers are folded down with the on/off and volume on one side. The other side has the built in retractable signal cable, another audio input and the power input. The unit is mostly wrapped in a black rubber that gives a solid “go anywhere” type feel.
