The Dell DJ-20 is designed to work with both MP3s and Microsoft WMA files. It’s also compatible with any of the popular online music stores that use secure WMA formats, including BuyMusic, Napster, MSN Music, and Wal-Mart. Of course, it doesn’t support AAC files or work with iTunes Music Store–that is strictly the province of the various iPods–nor does it support alternative formats such as OGG (Ogg Vorbis).

The DJ 20 has optional FM and voice recording, but they’re implemented through a wired remote with its own backlit display. The remote has a clip for your pocket, belt, or lapel. FM reception is good in strong signal areas, but somewhat spotty in fringe areas. Voice recording is clear. One advantage of the remote is that the microphone doesn’t pick up hard drive whine as it records. It also records from the radio.

Speaking of the battery, Dell installed an excellent one. Dell claims 16 hours with the backlight off, the EQ off, and volume at mid range. I used mine for more than 15 with the backlight on for five seconds and the volume at about 75%. I don’t know exactly how long it lasted, but I find Dells claim accurate, if not slightly modest. That’s the miracle of Lithium-Polymer. (They also won’t explode!) Further, the battery can be charged through USB or AC. The better news is that charges take the same amount of time (1:45 for 80% and 3:30 for 100%) with either connection. This makes it extremely convenient for anyone who uses their portable at two locations.
