Surprisingly, the Creative Zen Micro Photo is a fraction smaller (3.3 by 2.0 by 0.63 inches) than its monochrome-screen sibling, yet it manages to pack in 2GB to 3GB more storage, offering an 8GB microdrive, or about 2,000 songs. It doesn’t pack on any extra ounces either, keeping its lightweight status at 3.8 ounces. And you still get the easily removable and replaceable battery, a standard mini USB connection, and a hold switch. There’s also a choice of 10 colors–black, gray, white, pink, purple, green, orange, light blue, dark blue, and red–though some shades are slightly different than those of the Zen Micro. But the main difference, of course, is the Zen Micro Photo’s small, but nice, full-color OLED screen; it measures 1.6 inches diagonally, can display 262,144 colors, and is viewable from any angle.

Sporting a 1.5″ 262K colour OLED display and a 8 GB hard drive capable of storing up to 4,000 songs, the Creative Zen Micro Photo aims high as a mid-range HDD audio player. Sitting perfectly in ones hand, its slightly oval-shaped, metallic casing also harbours an FM radio and a photo album application. Bearing all these features in mind, we’re pleasantly surprised by the 115 g and 51 x 83 x 17.2 mm measurements and broad format support: MP3, WMA, PlaysForSure, WAV and IMA ADPCM are on board for audio as well as JPEG for photos.

The Zen Micro Photo is the newest MP3 player from Creative Technologies, an evolution of the Zen Micro player that came out earlier this year. The Zen Micro Photo is about the size of an iPod Mini, and features an 8gb MicroDrive, USB 2.0, OLED color screen, touch-sensitive controls, removable battery, charge-over-USB, FM radio/recording, voice recording, MP3 and WMA playback (including WMA10 DRM), and photo viewing (JPEG). It’s an MTP compliant device - not mass storage compliant - so it only works with Windows XP.
