The Archos 704 WiFi multimedia player features smooth video playback on a bright, reasonably sharp screen. The PVP offers a good viewing angle, and A/V recordings are very high quality. The touch screen is responsive to fingers or a stylus, and the player’s WiFi features add lots of versatility. The removable battery is a nice touch as are the included AC adapter and wireless remote. The Archos 704 WiFi multimedia player looks amazing on paper, but the Web browsing isn’t quite smooth enough. Still, as a video player it succeeds: the large screen size makes it ideal for planes, trains, and automobiles, though it’s too big to be an everyday music player.
Connecting the Archos 704 with a computer is a snap. It syncs with any Windows-, Linux-, or Mac-based computer without any software installation; and we found transfer speeds fairly zippy via Windows Media Player and drag and drop. You can transfer photos directly from cameras using yet another optional dock, or grab files from USB devices via the USB host port on the bottom next to the standard USB 2.0 port. The 704 doesn’t charge via USB, so plug in the charger if you’re transferring a lot of content.
The wireless features (802.11g) are potentially useful, but Web browsing can be frustrating, since page load times for sites like CNN and CNET are on the slow side and there’s a significant lag when you click on links or buttons. One nice touch is that the virtual keyboard automatically pops up when you click in a text field. Unfortunately, Opera isn’t compatible with all sites, and the version on the 704 doesn’t support Java or Flash graphics–that means no Yahoo Mail Beta, though Gmail works fine. You can also download files such as PDFs and view them, but the PDF viewer was very slow at loading files.

The new Archos 604 WiFi is perfectly designed for watching video on the go, and allows consumers to stay connected and navigate through menus easily with a stylus or even a fingertip. The touch screen and integrated 802.11g wireless interface will appeal to consumers who want to access their media wherever they go, including surfing the Web, sending and receiving email from Web-based mail applications, and connecting the device to a home network to transfer files or play content directly from the network. Future firmware upgrades (available in Q4 from the Archos web site) will feature SHOUTcast Internet radio support, an integrated Archos Podcatcher to automatically capture audio and video podcasts without using a computer, the possibility to download content from popular music and video on-line stores directly to the device, and TV viewing via a DSL modem (IPTV over WiFi).
The Archos 604 WiFi features 30GB hard drives, sleek form factors and dimensions that make it one of the slimmest, lightest, large-screen players on the market. It has a large, 4.3-inch colour touch screen LCD, and 30GB of hard-drive capacity for storing up to 130 hours3 of videos, 300,000 photos3 or 15,000 songs3. The optional DVR Station accessory turns the 604 WiFi into a portable Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that let consumers schedule and record favourite movies and programming directly from the television, DVD player2 or satellite receiver directly onto the device.

With a screen size surface three times that of similar size PMPs (portable media players), the Archos 604 lets you thoroughly enjoy movies and videos. This unit employs a bright 4.3-inch TFT LCD display with over 16 million colors to deliver a crystal-clear, sharp picture, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 480 x 272 pixels of resolution, as well as an intuitive GUI (graphic user interface) for easy-to-use navigation. Barring the words “WiFi” on the front and the contoured little bump on the unit’s upper right spine, the 604-WiFi from the outside is the 604’s identical twin. Technically, though, the 604-WiFi is a hair wider (thanks to the “bump” that houses the Wi-Fi antenna), taller, and thicker, and it weighs about an ounce more (5.2×3.1×0.7 inches and 10.23 ounces).
The screen isn’t as shiny as the 604’s due to its thin touch-screen layer, which adds a measure of protection and antiglare, but also negatively affects sharpness and colors (blacks aren’t as black). Regardless, the large widescreen is still a winner for viewing movies and photos, though imaging nerds will probably knock the screen.

Archos’s 604 (link to PDF) represents the latest in an esteemed line of gadgets from the king of portable video players (PVPs, or PMPs). Superb construction and design, an all-encompassing feature list, and solid performance should make this übergadget a highly coveted item, particularly because of its shockingly low base price of $350.
The caveats? The 604 is limited to 30GB of storage (though the thicker 504 goes all the way up to 160GB), and you’ll need to buy extra accessory kits to get the most out of the player (namely, using the device as an audio/video recorder). Throw in patchy out-of-the-box compatibility with some video formats and you’ve got reason to pause. But overall, we believe the 604, with its amazing screen, makes a worthy successor to the AV500.

The Archos 604 ($349.99 direct) is an update of the company’s impressive AV 500, which handily won PC Magazine’s Editors’ Choice award when it came out. The new version has a slightly bigger screen and different button layout, but it retains many of the features that made me love its predecessor. One big difference, though, is that you get a lot less in the box this time around, since many of the accessories are now optional extras—including the all-important docking station, which is required for recording video from analog sources. Even the USB Host feature, for connecting cameras and other USB devices, now requires an optional adapter. The 604 is available only in a 30GB hard drive configuration, whereas its predecessor came in 30GB and 100GB versions. There’s also an Archos 604 Wi-Fi ($449.99), which adds a touch-screen and 802.11g wireless capabilities for Web browsing, e-mail, and content downloading.

The Archos 104 is an update of the company’s 3GB Gmini XS 100, which was intended as a bare-bones MP3 player for digital-audio newbies. The new version—still hard drive–based, but now with 4GB of storage capacity—is a slight improvement on the original (and the name has
been streamlined too), though it’s now competing with flash-based players such as the Apple iPod nano and SanDisk Sansa e260, as well as other 4GB hard drive players such as the Cowon iAudio 6. What the player lacks in features and compactness, however, it makes up for in value; at just $159.99 (direct) for 4GB, it undercuts the competition by quite a bit. It’s not the fastest or sleekest on the block, but it’s not bad for what it is.

Archos 104 There’s a lot to like with Archos’ new low-end MP3 player, but it doesn’t quite add up to a desirable device. By David Haskin
The Archos 104 digital audio player sports lots of attractive features, but somehow all those good features don’t add up to a compelling device.
The good stuff includes a low price — at $160 for the 4 GB model we tested, the Archos 104 is the better part of a hundred bucks less expensive than a 4 GB iPod nano. It’s also about $30 less than the SanDisk Sansa e260, which we previously reviewed and which the Archos 104 resembles.
Despite the low price, the Archos 104 has a crisp, 1.5-inch color display, which is larger than the nano’s screen and smaller than the Sansa’s. Also exemplary is the device’s navigation, which is Windows-like. Depending on the context, the system first displays either icons or a text list for basic items such as music, showing images, data and setting up the device. From there, you navigate through folders and subfolders much as you would in Windows. And, like most other players, you also can navigate through your music by factors such as artist, album and genre. It’s easier to do than to explain — it’s really is quite simple.

We’ve been patiently awaiting the arrival of the Archos Gmini 104 for months, and here’s the problem with waiting so long for a product: Technology begins to pass it by. In fact, technology was already ahead of this cute, sleek little MP3 player when it was announced in March. The Creative Zen Micro Photo, which features double the capacity and several more features than the Gmini 104, had already been out for four or five months. And the iPod Nano had already started the trend for 4GB flash devices several months before that. So, seeing this colour-screened, 4GB microdrive player now is more than a bit anticlimactic. Still, it is an Archos, and since Archos so often puts out fine portable audio and video devices, we decided to give the Gmini 104 some face time.
