Archos has just officially announced the their 6th generation of PMPs and even making a splash into the world of 3G connectivity. The interface if felt was a bit awkward on the last generation 605 {link}, mainly due to the fact that it couldn’t quite make up its mind to be touch screen or tactile with the side buttons. It’s not that these hybrid touch/tactile interfaces don’t work, it just didn’t work with the Archos UI. That said I’m glad to see that Archos picked a side and went all touch.
All around it looks like it’s a further refined version of the 5th generation PMPs. This is good news since I thought that the 605 was a fantastic jack of all trades PMP, but it just felt a bit rough.

Hot on the heels of the official launch of the TV+ box, Archos has announced a newly revamped PMP. The Archos 405 is now packing a 30GB hard drive to carry all that lovely content you’ve downloaded. That’s around 40 movies, 300,000 photos or 15,000 songs, if you were wondering.
This is a substantial boost to its previous incarnation which had a capacity of just 2GB behind a 3.5" screen. The mini DVR will presumably be a handy complement to the TV+, expanding the popular Generation 5 range. It’ll be available in the UK next month for £199.99.

Word on the street has it that Archose will be introducing a new line of portable media players that come with SIM card slots. One can only speculate as to why Archos would want to do that, and chances are this SIM card will be used to give user access to 3G networks as well as the capability of downloading music on-demand without the need for a WiFi hotspot. Orange has so far been targeted as a possible network partner, although recent ripples in the industry seem to point toward AT&T and Neuf-Cegetel as well. As with any other rumor, time will tell and verify its truth.

Archos has introduced its Generation 5 line of personal media players, combining video playback and recording capability with big screens, plenty of storage, the ability to play Flash-powered video, and (for two models) Wi-Fi connectivity, a TV program guide, and the ability to purchase video content from CinemaNow.
“Generation 5 is a breakthrough product line for Archos, with the right combination of content, capabilities, and price to make it easy for technology novices, while still exciting gadget fans,” said Henri Crohas, Archos’s founder and CEO. “Our focus is on the consumer—their interests, their budget, and their time—and the new products represent the first connected PMPs that give consumers exactly the options they’re looking for.”
